Apple To Discontinue 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Replace It With 13-inch M3 iPad Pro, Says Report

Apple Inc. AAPL is reportedly gearing up to phase out one of its iPad Pro models – the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be axed and replaced by the slightly larger 13-inch iPad Pro.

What Happened: Apple is planning to discontinue the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and replace it with the M3-powered 13-inch iPad Pro, reported TrendForce.

The M3-powered iPad Pro will sport a marginally larger 13-inch OLED display, scheduled to launch in 2024.

Display analyst Ross Young had earlier predicted the transition towards a larger OLED display, which Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman later confirmed. The switch to OLED is expected to offer better brightness, contrast, color accuracy, and power efficiency.

Apple’s ProMotion technology, integral to iPad Pro models since 2017, could also see improvements with OLED integration. This could enable refresh rates as low as 10Hz to save battery life, akin to the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display.

Apple is also expected to update its iPad Air, iPad mini, and entry-level iPad models in 2024.

Why It Matters: The discontinuation of the mini-LED iPad Pro model reflects a larger industry trend of declining consumer demand for certain electronics, as outlined in the report.

Apple’s decision may be influenced by these market dynamics, positioning OLED as a more favorable technology for its premium iPad Pro line-up.
