Chris Christie Urges House Republicans To Swiftly Choose New Speaker: 'Just Pick Someone'

Close to three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was deposed as House Speaker, House Republicans are yet to settle on a replacement, leading to frustration within the party. The situation has irked GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie.

According to a Business Insider report, Christie remarked during a town hall meeting in Charleston, South Carolina. He stressed that the deadlock was hampering the U.S.’s ability to assist its allies globally.

“They asked me on TV on Thursday, ‘Who do you want to be Speaker?’ I said I don’t care. Just pick someone!” he said.

He added, “Just pick someone because Israel needs help. Ukraine needs help. Our southern border needs to be secured.”

The Republicans are slated to reconvene on Monday to listen to pitches from potential Speaker candidates, with an internal vote for a nominee planned for Tuesday.

After McCarthy’s removal, the party considered House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R -La.), but his bid stumbled amid opposition. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was next in line, but he lacked the widespread support needed to secure 217 votes and win.

Christie emphasized this weekend that House Republicans have been overly fixated with “who’s going to get the big office with the view of the National Mall to make sure their ego is okay.”

“Make a decision! Be done already! That’s what we need to do,” he concluded.
