In a recent interview, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), criticized former President Donald Trump, referring to him as a “failure of character.” Romney also dismissed the idea of running for president in 2024.
According to a USA Today report, Romney suggested that Trump’s character has negatively impacted the nation.
He stated, "Donald Trump represents a failure of character, which is changing, I think, in many respects, the psyche of our nation."
During the interview with CBS News, he further expressed his estrangement from the Republican Party.
"No question I don't really have a home in my party. I come from a tradition of Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush and George W. Bush and John McCain.”
He added, "That's the party I've come from, and I don't recognize that in the great majority of our party today."
Romney definitively ruled it out when asked about a potential presidential run in 2024.
He humorously stated, "I can't imagine any circumstance. Perhaps if Godzilla comes in and removes all the other candidates…no, I'm not running for president, not giving it any thought."
The interview appears ahead of a forthcoming biography about Romney by McKay Coppins. In excerpts from the book, Romney reportedly mentions that many Senate Republicans share his disdain for the former president but are unwilling to voice it publicly.
