Ken Buck Says Kicked Out Of Colorado Office For Not Backing Jim Jordan: 'Family Members Have Been Approached And Threatened'

Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) reported receiving four death threats following his refusal to back Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio)’s bid for speakership.

What Happened: In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press Now,” Buck revealed that the threats were a consequence of his voting record on the Speaker issue. He also mentioned his eviction from his office in Colorado due to his landlord’s dissatisfaction with his voting behavior.

"So far, I've had four death threats, I've been evicted from my office in … Colorado — I have notice of an eviction because the landlord is mad with my voting record on the Speaker issue," Buck said.

Buck’s office, staffed by six full-time employees, has been overwhelmed with phone calls, with around 20,000 messages still left unanswered. Buck chose not to support Jordan in both ballots, instead giving his vote to House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).

The Congressman also shared an insight into the tension within the GOP conference. He attributed part of this to the numerous calls and threats made to several lawmakers. “Family members have been approached and threatened… all kinds of things are going on. There’s going to be some tension,” Buck stated.

Why It Matters: The House GOP has been grappling with leadership issues since the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the Speaker’s role two weeks ago. On Thursday, the GOP held a closed-door conference meeting to discuss the potential courses of action amid challenges in reaching a consensus on a candidate for the position of Speaker.

Jordan’s plans for a third vote were put on hold as opponents showed no signs of relenting. Whether Jordan can gather enough support to claim the Speaker’s position remains uncertain.
