In the midst of a historic vote, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has dismissed allegations of breaking a commitment to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
What Happened: According to The Hill, McCarthy was removed from his role as Speaker earlier this week, a first in the House’s history. He claimed that Pelosi promised to keep Democrats by his side in the event of a vote against him.

Pelosi, however, has firmly denied any such commitment. “Not really. I had no promise to him,” she stated. “Our Democratic members made their decision.” She also mentioned Democratic concerns leading to McCarthy’s removal, including the Republican impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
Eight Republicans, spearheaded by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), allied with Democrats in a 216-210 vote to dethrone McCarthy. Following his removal, McCarthy has confirmed that he will not campaign for the Speakership again.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) is currently serving as Speaker pro tempore until a new Speaker is elected. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) are considered leading contenders in the race.
