This 'Not Super Common' Factor Could Help You Live To 100 Or Longer Even If You Drink, Smoke And Rarely Exercise

Zinger Key Points
  • Experts advise caution when it comes to searching for secrets for a long life from those who have lived them.
  • People who live to be 100 are likely benefiting from something only about 2% of the population has.

The number of people who live to be 100 is increasing, but it's not likely a result of their lifestyles. Instead, they are likely benefiting from something found in only about 2% of the population.

What To Know: Many people often look to the elderly, searching for secrets on longevity, but experts advise caution. The truth is, most centenarians simply have the right biomarkers, according to CNBC

Healthy Longevity Clinic uses health biomarkers like DNA and blood pressure to create plans for clients that help to lengthen their lives. The CEO of the company, Petr Sramek, admits that most people who live to be 100 were dealt the right cards.

Those who live to be 100 years of age are probably benefitting from longevity genes, which are "not super common," Sramek said.

"Probably up to 2% of the population has these factors," he said.

"These people do not need to follow the best lifestyle. They can drink or not exercise or maybe smoke. They are still living longer and are in good health, but they are the exceptions. You cannot use anything from their lifestyle as an example."

Many people who have reached the 100-year mark credit their longevity to regular exercise or positive attitudes, but these things might not work for everyone.

Experts tend to agree that there isn't likely to be one formula for a long life, and even if there were, you wouldn't be likely to discover it from someone who has lived to be 100 — they're probably just benefitting from good genes.
