Jimmy Carter's Rise To Presidency Gets Spotlight In This 96-Year-Old's Memoir

Dorothy “Dot” Padgett’s memoir reveals an inside look at former president Jimmy Carter‘s political journey, including her pivotal role in his 1970s campaigns. The memoir titled, “Jimmy Carter: Elected President With Pocket Change and Peanuts,” emphasizes the former president’s determination and the robust volunteer group known as the “Peanut Brigade,” The Washington Post reported.

Carter, approaching his 99th birthday, sought Padgett’s assistance over 50 years ago, following a failed bid for Georgia governor in the 1966 Democratic primary. Padgett, then a 43-year-old mother of four, was suggested by Carter’s adviser, Charles Kirbo. Her hardworking reputation and her organizational skills made her a valuable asset to Carter’s political ambitions.

The memoir also highlights the grassroots nature of Carter’s campaigns, as Padgett and the “Peanut Brigade” tirelessly worked to promote Carter’s bid for governor and later for the presidency. The brigade consisted of volunteers from all walks of life, including housewives, professionals, and students.

Padgett’s book is not only an account of Carter’s political journey but also a testament to Padgett’s own ascent in politics. From a campaign volunteer, she moved on to become the Georgia coordinator for the 1976 Carter-Mondale campaign and later an assistant chief of protocol at the State Department.

The memoir offers a unique perspective on Carter’s presidency and his contributions to the country. Padgett aims to elevate Carter’s historical standing, insisting that he deserves credit as one of the best presidents.
