Maxine Waters 'Not Prepared to Save' McCarthy If GOP Votes To Oust Speaker Over Spending Cuts Dispute

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) firmly stated she has no intention of supporting Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy should the GOP decide to remove him over a spending dispute.

What Happened: Waters, during an interview on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show,” expressed her sentiments after she was asked if there was a chance she and her Democrat colleagues might vote to retain McCarthy in the Speaker’s chair.

"I cannot speak up at the leadership. And I think Chairman Jeffries has said let's see what happens. But I for one, I'm not prepared to save him. Not at all. Not with the cuts that they're proposing,” Waters responded.

Why It Matters: The comments came amidst disputes over government spending within the House’s GOP faction.

The federal government is at risk of running out of funds by the end of the month without Congressional action.

Regarding the potential shutdown, Waters stated that the “Republican Party is in complete disarray,” and that McCarthy has “no control” over his party colleagues.

Last week, the speaker had promised to exclude Ukraine assistance from the Pentagon’s budget bill following a vote against it by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and some hard-line Republicans.
