Trump Continues Push for Federal Judge Chutkan's Recusal In Jan. 6 Case, Alleges Bias

Former President Donald Trump's legal team has once again appealed for the recusal of U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan from his 2020 election criminal case, CNN reported.

Trump’s legal team argued that Chutkan’s handling of the case could be perceived as politically biased. They cited Trump’s political successes and suggested that the prosecution of him might be viewed as a politically motivated attack.

The lawyers used Chutkan’s own words against her, highlighting her phrase “presidents are not kings” which she had used previously to deny a Trump bid to block House investigators from obtaining his presidential records.

“The public must have confidence that President Trump's constitutional rights are being protected by an unbiased judicial officer. No president is a king, but every president is a United States citizen entitled to the protections and rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution,” the statement from the lawyers read.

Chutkan will make the final decision on whether she should withdraw from the case. While Trump’s request is seen as a long shot, his filings could be used in appeals if he is convicted. Trump has consistently questioned Chutkan’s fairness, despite Justice Department officials arguing that there is no evidence of her being improper in handling other Jan. 6 cases.

In addition to this, Trump faces a request from federal prosecutors for Chutkan to further restrict his public comments about the case and potential witnesses, due to concerns about harassment caused by his social media attacks. The judge is currently considering this request.
