John Fetterman, Matt Gaetz Engage In War Of Words Over Potential Government Shutdown: 'Get Your Sh*t Together And Do Your Job'

As the U.S. grapples with the imminent threat of a government shutdown, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) have been at odds in a heated social media exchange.

What Happened: On Thursday, Fetterman responded to a post by Gaetz on X (formerly known as Twitter) regarding the House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Fetterman posted on the platform, “Government shutdown in t-minus 16 days. Instead of crying about how I dress, how about you get your sh*t together and do your job, bud?”

Gaetz had critiqued Fetterman’s attire in his original post and claimed the evidence against Biden was overwhelming. “While the Senate will be the platform, the American people will ultimately be the jury when we put that case before them,” Gaetz wrote.

This altercation comes at a crucial time, with federal funding set to run out by the end of September, threatening a potential government shutdown.

After Fetterman’s clapback, Gaetz retaliated by listing his recent actions towards Term Limits, Balanced Budgets, and Single-Subject Spending Bills, and questioned Fetterman’s stance on these initiatives.

Why It Matters: This spat follows a recent announcement by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) about initiating an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

Earlier this month, Fetterman had dismissed this potential inquiry, labeling it a mere “circlejerk on the fringe right.”

Many Democrats, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), have warned that this impeachment drive lacks evidence against the president and could lead to the downfall of the Republican Party.
