Former White House Aide Gabe Amo Triumphs In Rhode Island Democratic House Primary

Ex-White House aide Gabe Amo clinched victory in the Democratic primary for Rhode Island’s first Congressional District special election, advancing to the November general election, CBS News reported.

Amo is vying to fill the vacancy left by former Democratic Representative David Cicilline, who resigned earlier this summer to head the Rhode Island Foundation. A win in November would make Amo the first Black candidate to represent Rhode Island in the U.S. House.

In his campaign, Amo has pledged to tackle gun control, secure Social Security and Medicare, codify Roe v. Wade into federal law and push for more federal action on climate change. He received an endorsement from ex-Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy.

Leonard, a proponent of term limits and resident of Jamestown, has expressed skepticism towards “Bidenomics”, favoring a more limited government and clear strategies in international aid efforts. If elected, he would be the first Republican to represent the district since 1995.

The general election is set for Nov. 7, where Amo and Leonard will go head-to-head.
