Apple Inc.’s AAPL iPhone safety feature is set to receive a boost from an unexpected ally, Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The two companies are joining forces to enhance the Emergency SOS capabilities of Apple’s latest smartphones.

What happened: According to a report by Nola, Globalstar plans to spend $64 million over the next two years to use SpaceX’s satellites. In this venture, Apple’s partner Globalstar, which manages the necessary satellites for the service, plays a crucial role. Globalstar has been providing 85% of its network for Apple’s use in phones and intends to continue doing so for future deals. This would give Apple a wider range of satellites for its SOS services.

As per the report, the partnership aims to improve the accessibility of emergency services for iPhone users, even without WiFi or cellular signal. This was initially introduced with the iPhone 14.

Why is it important: Currently exclusive to the iPhone 14 line, these services are expected to be available with the upcoming iPhone 15 series. They enable users to text emergency services and share vital information and location when cell service is unavailable.

Despite the high costs of establishing networks and maintaining satellites, Apple has been offering the SOS service for free for two years following the activation of the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro.
