Gina Raimondo Acknowledges Being Targeted By Hackers During China Visit: 'I Brought It Up'

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo confirmed on Sunday that she was targeted by Chinese hackers before her recent visit to the East Asian nation.

Raimondo expressed her displeasure during her visit, stating, “They did hack me, which was unappreciated, to say the least. I brought it up, clearly. Put it right on the table,” Raimondo told host Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press."

She further indicated how this act undermined trust while addressing the topic of U.S.-China relations on CBS‘ “Face the Nation.”

Raimondo, the first Commerce Secretary to visit China in five years, was in the country upon invitation from the Chinese Minister of Commerce, Weng Wentao. Her visit was a step towards improving dialogue between the two economic powerhouses and a move to support President Joe Biden's tech blockade against China.

During her visit, Raimondo announced a new “working group” on commercial issues and initiated a new “information exchange” dialog.

Addressing her interactions with Chinese officials, Raimondo said, “In my trip, even the most senior Chinese officials said all of the right things, said that they wanted to have a robust commercial relationship, and treat American businesses fairly on the ground in China.”
