Dial Back The Years With WinGPT, A ChatGPT App For Your Windows 3.1 Computer

Fancy using ChatGPT on the ancient Windows 3.1 operating system? You can do that now, courtesy of the WinGPT app that brings ChatGPT to Windows 3.1 computers.

What Happened: A mysterious developer is back with another Windows 3.1 app – this time, it's WinGPT, a ChatGPT client that can run on the ancient 31-year-old Windows 3.1 operating system.

Microsoft launched Windows 3.1 in 1992 with several firsts for its operating system, including screensaver support, registry, Windows Media Player, and Sound Recorder. It was also Microsoft Corp's MSFT last 16-bit operating system.

WinGPT is also from the same developer who launched Windle, a Windows 3.1 app for the popular word game Wordle.

"I didn't want my Gateway 4DX2-66 from 1993 to be left out of the AI revolution, so I built an AI Assistant for Windows 3.1, based on the OpenAI API," the developer said on Hacker News.

The developer's primary challenge while making the WinGPT app was the severe memory limitations of Windows 3.1 and 386-based computers. The maximum memory supported by Windows 3.1 was 256MB – it could run on computers with as little memory as 1MB.

If you have an old Windows 3.1 computer or a newer version of Windows in 16-bit or 32-bit format, you can give WinGPT a shot by downloading the app from the developer's website, Dialup.net.

ChatGPT Is Coming To Windows 11: Microsoft is going all in on ChatGPT, and the latest news is that it is working on an update to bring it to your Windows 11 taskbar and a ChatGPT-powered Copilot that will run alongside other Windows apps.

Some of the things that Windows Copilot will be able to do is change Windows settings, rearrange windows, summarize and rewrite documents, and more.
