Watch: Did Tesla Autopilot Make A Life-Saving Maneuver After This 'Insane' Road Crash?

Despite all the backlash, Tesla, Inc.’s TSLA Autopilot advanced driver assistance system recently proved its safety credentials.

What Happened: A Tesla owner shared on Twitter video footage of an accident that happened on the highway that was recorded on his vehicle’s Autopilot camera and saved on the flash drive on the car.

The video footage showed a black Kia vehicle overtaking the Tesla from the left. However, as the Kia went past a modified pick-up truck with extruded tires, the latter’s side wheel got detached from the axle, went under the Kia and sent it flying in the air.

As the loose wheel rolled over after the accident, the footage showed the Tesla swerving to the right, which the driver claimed was the Autopilot vision detecting the fast-moving object and quickly reacting.

Why It’s Important: Tesla is in the advanced stage of beta testing its full-self driving software, which would mark a big upgrade from the Autopilot. Elon Musk is hoping to achieve Level 4 or 5 autonomy with the FSD software when it is made available for wider use.

Meanwhile, detractors accuse the company of engendering the lives of people by testing a half-backed technology on roads.
