MrBeast Bought A GameStop Store For $80K, But Should He Have Bought GME Stock Instead?

Well-known YouTube personality MrBeast is known for his giveaways to his fans. One stunt in January included buying a GameStop store and giving away all the contents inside.

What Happened: MrBeast purchased items from five stores in January. This included a clothing store, a GameStop Corp GME store, a car dealership, a sports store and a Food Lion location.

MrBeast tweeted out about what would have happened if he bought GameStop stock instead of the store, from which he gave away 1,000 video games and gaming merchandise from.

“Wait a minute, you guys are buying GameStop stock? I thought I was supposed to buy an actual GameStop…Whoops,” MrBeast said.

The popular YouTube star went on to say that he would have $1.2 million if he bought GameStop stock instead of spending the $80,000 on GameStop merchandise.

Why It’s Important: MrBeast is one of the most well known social media influencers, which could bring more brand awareness to GameStop.

MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has 9.2 million followers on Twitter and 52.5 million followers on YouTube.

Donaldson was the second highest-grossing YouTube influencer in 2020, making over $24 million and seeing 3 billion views for his videos.

MrBeast posted to WallStreetBets, the subreddit that has fueled the GameStop rally, in July 2020 asking users where he should invest $100,000. Some users responded with GameStop, but it was other stocks that won out as the majority.

GameStop shares traded between $4 and $5 for most of July. The $100,000 could have acquired 20,000 shares of GameStop. That hypothetical stake would be worth $4.65 million today.

GME Price Action: Shares of GameStop closed Monday's session down 28% to $232.28.
