Wendy's Veggie Burger Well Received in Test Markets as Vegan Trend Accelerates

The latest data from TickerTags indicates that Wendy’s Co WEN's new veggie burger could be a hit. Wendy’s began testing the new vegan Black Bean Burger at 24 locations back in January, and so far the social media response has been extremely positive. Although the sample size is small, Wendy’s is hopeful that it may have finally figured out the formula for a successful fast food vegetarian burger.

TickerTags monitors social media sites to identify trends by searching for words and phrases that appear together in social media content, such as tweets.

So far, social media conversation surrounding Wendy’s Black Bean Burger has been three times as positive as conversations about Wendy’s in general.

Wendy’s surprise smash hit Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger two years ago proved that a single menu item can have a meaningful impact on the company’s bottom line. If the positive response to the Black Bean Burger in the test markets translates in a nationwide launch, the burger could single-handedly lift Wendy’s share price.



The large and growing vegan market remains largely untapped by fast food companies. The number of Twitter conversations that include the word “vegan” is up an astounding 120 percent in the past year.
