Blockchain Gaming Booms: New Report Uncovers Surge In Popularity Despite Bot Concerns

Zinger Key Points
  • DappRadar's October report shows a surge in crypto game users, with top games like Alien Worlds leading the trend.
  • Bots pose a significant challenge in crypto gaming, as evidenced by Alien Worlds' and Axie Infinity's bot-related issues.

A new report from DappRadar reveals that on four separate days in October, crypto-powered games achieved an impressive milestone, recording 1 million daily unique active wallets (dUAW). That's an increase from three days recorded in September when the same milestone was reached.

A similar case of a high number of users connecting their crypto wallets to blockchain games was seen in late 2021 and early 2022 led by games like Splinterlands, Alien Worlds, and Axie Infinity. April 2023 also saw user counts rise significantly.

DappRadar noted that while gaming accounted for 33% of decentralized app (Dapp) activity in October 2023, it is close to impossible to know exactly how much of that activity was real, individual human users and how many are bots on the blockchain.

October’s top games in terms of highest daily unique active wallets are - Alien Worlds (exceeding 133,000 dUAW), Sweat Economy (73,000 dUAW), SecondLive (54,000 dUAW), Splinterlands, and Battle Left Center Right (BLCR).

WAX blockchain remains the leading ecosystem for gaming activity with 406,030 dUAW (+8% from the prior month) while NEAR Protocol saw a 34% jump to 229,603 dUAW. Celo blockchain reported a more than five times increase in its October gaming activity to 198,165 dUAW.

October’s virtual world dapps witnessed a 19% rise in trading volume to $3.8 million, while Web3 gaming investments saw a 4% drop to $154 million from the prior month, DappRadar reported.

Bots Attack: The biggest crypto games are currently battling against a surge in automated bots. Over the years, Alien Worlds has been attacked with bot accounts, impacting the number of real humans playing the game.

In October, the Alien Worlds X account reported at least 1.6 million accounts using the game were bots. Axie Infinity also had to confront the bots problem in 2021.

“Given that we have spent nine years working on the movement verification, we are confident that the number of bots earning SWEAT is close to zero,” Decrypt reported, citing Sweat Economy Cofounder Oleg Fomenko.
