Whoopi Goldberg is no stranger to spotlight, challenges or activism. The Emmy, Grammy, Academy and Tony Award-winning artist has been a force to reckon with, from her iconic role as Celie in "The Color Purple" to her unabashed advocacy on various social causes. But, did you know that she harbors a profound passion for the therapeutic potentials of cannabis? It's a love story that goes way beyond mere recreation and dives deep into the realms of holistic well-being.
“I’ve spent the better part of my life standing up for issues that were important to me,” said Goldberg in a 2018 OpEd, focusing on cannabis. She wrote that believes marijuana has a place beyond just leisurely getting high. To Whoopi, it's a well-being issue. It’s about making that crucial distinction between simply smoking up for fun and harnessing the marijuana plant's therapeutic properties. Particularly for women's comfort, and most poignantly, menstrual pain and discomfort.
“I asked a friend in the cannabis industry if anyone was doing marijuana for menstrual cramps and when he said no, I knew someone had to – and that it may as well be us,” Whoopi said in an exclusive interview. This was this spark that led to her association with the world of cannabis, a commitment to alleviate the monthly ordeal so many women face.
The Evolution Of Whoopi's Relationship With Cannabis
Even during her younger years, Whoopi recognized cannabis's therapeutic properties. “When I was younger, I realized it helped my cramps, and I’ve had a good relationship with it since,” she reflected. This affinity has only grown stronger over the years, providing her with relief as age introduced new challenges. “We’re not saying [cannabis] products will work for everyone, but I think it’s worth trying.”

But how does the world of cannabis intersect with the entertainment industry, you might wonder?
The realms of business and artistry present their unique challenges, but according to Goldberg, the principles remain consistent. “Quality and working with the right people is important no matter what you do in life,” she said with conviction.
Goldberg ended with a message to budding entrepreneurs, especially those eyeing the cannabis space: “Jump in and try it, you never know what can happen until you do.”
