Global Markets Today While US Was Sleeping

On Friday, July 20, the U.S. Markets ended mixed, with Dow Jones continuing its winning streak for the tenth day. Health and utilities sectors rose, while materials and communication services lagged.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed higher by 0.01% at 35,227.69 on Friday; the S&P 500 was up 0.03% to 4,536.34; and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.22% to 14,032.80.

In terms of earnings season, over 75% of S&P 500 companies that have disclosed quarterly results thus far have exceeded profit estimates.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is largely expected to raise interest rates again on July 26, 2023, Wednesday.

 

Asian Markets Today

  • Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.17%, ending Monday’s session at 32,692.50. The gain was led by automakers rallying amid a weaker yen, chip-related stocks rebounded, and Steel companies also gained. According to the July flash PMI data, activity at Japanese private sector firms increased for the seventh successive month.
  • Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 closed Monday’s session 0.10% lower at 7,306.40, with miners leading the losers.
  • Shanghai Composite closed at 3,164.16, down 0.11%; Shenzhen CSI 300 closed 0.44% lower at 3,805.22. Stocks slipped as losses in consumer-related shares countered gains in computer stocks.
  • Hang Seng index in Hong Kong fell 2.25% at closing to 18,646.00, dragged by real estate stocks which led the losses.

 

Eurozone at 05:45 AM ET

  • The Pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.15%. The DAX index in Germany traded 0.12% higher, and the CAC 40 in France slid 0.15%.
  • The U.K.’s FTSE 100 traded higher by 0.06%, as gains in telecoms firms balanced losses in financial stocks.

 

Commodities at 05:45 AM ET

  • Crude Oil WTI was trading higher by 0.52% at $77.48/bbl, and Brent Oil was up by 0.46% at $81.26/bbl.       
  • Natural Gas was trading higher by 0.30% at $2.716.
  • Gold was trading up 0.05% at $1,967.75, Silver down 0.16% to $24.815, and Copper slipped 0.17% at $3.8113.

 

US Futures at 05:45 AM ET

  • Dow futures were up 0.18%, S&P 500 futures were up 0.23%, and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.31%.

 

US Dollar Index at 05:45 AM ET

  • The U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.15% to 101.22.
