The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that it has indicted a person for threatening to kill President Joe Biden and Jan.6 House Select Committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).
What Happened: Robert Maverick Vargo, 25, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of threatening the President of the United States, interstate communications with a threat, and influencing a federal official by threat, said the DoJ.
United States Attorney Gerard Karam alleged that on Oct. 11, Thompson’s office received a letter from Vargo which contained threats to kill the Representative and his family. The letter also threatened the president.
The letter alluded to “Anthrax” and contained what the DoJ described as “a white powder.”
“I'm going to kill you! I will make you feel the rest of our pain & suffering. There is nowhere or nobody who can keep you from me. I am going to kill you & those you love. I promise you that I will keep my promise until the day of my death," read the letter, according to the statement.
The letter further stated, “You & Joe Biden soon will face death for the wrongs you’ve done to US,”
Why It Matters: Vargo, who is from Berwick, Pennsylvania, faces a total of 25 years in prison for these offenses along with a fine, according to the DoJ.
The Department said that investigations from the U.S. Capitol Police Hazardous Material Response Team determined that the powder did not pose “an immediate public safety hazard.”
The threatening letter and the powder were sent by Vargo from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
