Starlink Targets Sub-20 Millisecond Latency: Musk Says It Needs To Be 'Excellent For Real-Time Video Games'

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that the company has made big improvements to make Starlink’s internet faster, especially for real-time activities like online gaming.

What Happened: Starlink has been working to reduce latency, aiming for it to be less than 20 milliseconds, Musk revealed.

“(Starlink) Needs to be excellent for real-time video games,” Musk said.

Starlink is currently serving over 2.3 million users in more than 70 countries. 

Musk recently said Starlink’s goal lies in bringing internet access to areas where it’s not affordable or easily available. 

Why It Matters: Last week, Starlink said it had successfully transmitted and received text messages using T-Mobile‘s network spectrum through their new direct-to-cell satellites.

Musk announced in early November that Starlink has achieved breakeven cash flow. This sparked hopes for an IPO as Musk had previously said that SpaceX would probably IPO the segment when its revenue growth is ‘smooth and predictable.’

Starlink parent SpaceX, meanwhile, is valued at $180 billion based on a recent tender offer.
