Bob Iger Admits Recent Disney Movies Fell Short Of Company's Quality Standards: 'We Lost Some Focus'

Disney’s DIS CEO Bob Iger has candidly acknowledged that the company’s recent films have not met their own quality expectations.

What Happened: Iger made the confession during Disney’s fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Business Insider reported. A series of box office disappointments, including “Elemental,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” have been a stark contrast to the studio’s successful run from 2005 to 2020.

The once unstoppable Marvel Cinematic Universe also took a hit, with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” underperforming, and projections for the upcoming “The Marvels” appearing bleak. Both films have received lukewarm to poor reviews.

Iger defended the film roster he predominantly inherited, highlighting that Disney had four of the 10 biggest films of 2022. However, he largely agreed with the analyst’s assessment.

“Quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality, and I think that’s exactly what happened. We lost some focus,” Iger admitted.

In response to these challenges, Iger proclaimed his plan to overhaul the film studio. This includes being more discerning about both the sequels that are made and the new original movies that Disney launches. He highlighted “Wish,” an upcoming Disney Animation film, as a promising release.
