Leading With Purpose: Johnny Sirpilla's Mission To Elevate Employee Well-Being

In business, true leaders are distinguished not only by their financial accomplishments but also by their profound impact on their employees and the communities they serve.

One such remarkable figure is Johnny Sirpilla, an entrepreneur and business executive whose visionary leadership has redefined the meaning of success. His philosophy centers on elevating the well-being of his employees and fostering a work environment that thrives on mutual respect and positivity.

In a world driven by bottom lines and shareholder expectations, Johnny Sirpilla's approach to leadership has been a breath of fresh air.

As the former President and Chief Business Development Officer of Camping World and Good Sam and the owner of Encourage, LLC,  he has played a pivotal role in driving his businesses' growth. But, a series of personal tragedies reshaped his perspective on leadership and fuelled his commitment to creating a positive work environment where employees thrive.

Johnny Sirpilla’s journey of purpose-driven leadership began with the profound loss of his three children. This heart-wrenching experience forced him to reevaluate the true meaning of success and how leaders can impact their teams’ lives.

While navigating his grief, Johnny realized that business success alone could not fulfill the void left by personal loss. He sought a higher purpose that would positively impact his employees' lives.

Fueled by his newfound purpose, Sirpilla embarked on a mission to transform the workplace culture at Sirpilla R.V. Center, Inc. - a company that, at the time, was in a new stage of leadership.

“In the aftermath of my losses, I had to reevaluate my role as a business executive. I remember looking at my company and realizing that while I was consumed by grief, I’d allowed the company climate to shift toward a certain level of disrespect towards co-workers, which I simply couldn’t stand for,” Sirpilla reflects.

To address the company's unexpected but deep-rooted issues, Sirpilla developed a groundbreaking work program that prioritized respect, compassion, employee well-being, and open communication.

By encouraging his team to take ownership of their roles and supporting their professional growth, he created a culture where employees felt valued and appreciated. As a result, employee satisfaction and retention soared, leading to greater overall productivity and business success. Johnny then developed “Forward Focus,” which became the central theme of the desired culture.

"Forward Focus" became the central theme of the desired culture.  Forward Focus illuminates employee strengths, what we like about each other, solution-oriented thinking, and teamwork.  Backward thinking is where our insecurities live, what we don't like about ourselves, and our daily problems.  The employees received one year of training from Johnny, and then each employee's future employment was evaluated if they aligned with the new direction.  Each employee had time to adjust, reposition their thinking and break old habits if desired.  If not, they were relieved of their position and wished well in future endeavors.  Two important team members could not make the transition into the new culture genuinely and were respectfully dismissed.

“The impact of workplace culture on personal lives is tremendous,” Sirpilla explains. “If we cultivate positivity and respect at work, it not only energizes one’s employees but also allows them to carry this positive energy back home, fostering a virtuous cycle.”

Sirpilla’s philosophy regarding employee well-being feels particularly relevant in today's age, where the realities of the corporate world paint a worrying picture.

According to Gallup, quiet quitters—individuals who do the minimum requirements at their jobs and don't put more time, effort, or enthusiasm than necessary— comprise about 60% of the US workforce. On the other hand, studies have shown that tens of millions of Americans quit their jobs in 2021, totaling a staggering 46 million by 2022.

Sirpilla believes that “quiet quitting” and the worrying “Great Resignation” trend have one root cause.

“It’s important for business leaders to understand that all these people are not quitting companies. They're quitting bosses. This is why, as leaders, we need a complete shift in mindset,” Sirpilla argues. “If we want to keep our employees, we need to ensure they’re fulfilled and well-taken care of so they can take that positive workplace energy back home. After all, a happy workplace breeds happy homes.”

In a cutthroat world that often values profit over people, Sirpilla has been a shining example of a leader who embraces purpose as the driving force behind success. Through his public speaking engagements, podcasts, and writings, he spreads a message of compassion, understanding, and the importance of fostering a positive work environment.

His vision of leadership is a reminder that compassion and empathy are the catalysts for growth and fulfillment, both in the workplace and beyond.

As Sirpilla puts it, “We have a duty to uplift and support one another on this shared journey. When we lead with purpose and compassion, we pave the way for a brighter, more harmonious world—where success is not just a destination, but a collective evolution of the human spirit.”
