Dow Dips Over 1%; Walmart Shares Plunge Following Soft Guidance

U.S. stocks traded lower toward the end of trading, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 1% on Thursday.

The Dow traded down 1.11% to 44,132.13 while the NASDAQ fell 0.54% to 19,947.18. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.49% to 6,114.11.

Energy shares jumped by 0.8% on Thursday.

In trading on Thursday, financials shares fell by 1.6%.

Top Headline

Walmart Inc WMT shares fell more than 5% on Thursday following the release of quarterly results.

The company reported fourth-quarter FY25 sales growth of 4.1% year-on-year to $180.55 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $180.01 billion. The retailer reported that in the fourth quarter of 2025, adjusted EPS was 66 cents, beating the consensus estimate of 64 cents.

Walmart said it sees first-quarter FY26 sales growth of 3% – 4% in CC and adjusted EPS of $0.57 – $0.58 against an estimate of $0.64. For FY26 Walmart expects sales to grow 3% – 4% in CC and an adjusted EPS of $2.50 – $2.60, below the $2.76 estimate.

  • Mobile-health Network Solutions MNDR shares shot up 129% to $0.7558.
  • Shares of Xos, Inc. XOSgot a boost, surging 95% to $6.21.
  • Volato Group, Inc. SOAR shares were also up, gaining 84% to $0.2457. Volato Group disclosed that Vaunt, its fast-growing private aviation platform, has reached a major milestone, reporting $1.5 million in annual recurring revenue within its first year, a 50% surge since mid-2024.

In commodity news, oil traded up 0.4% to $72.53 while gold traded up 0.6% at $2,954.40.

Silver traded up 1.2% to $33.425 on Thursday, while copper rose 1% to $4.6080.

Euro zone

European shares closed mixed today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 fell 0.20%, Germany's DAX 40 fell 0.53% and France's CAC 40 gained 0.15%. Spain's IBEX 35 Index rose 0.3%, while London's FTSE 100 fell 0.57%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed lower on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 1.24%, China's Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.02%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index falling 1.60% and India's BSE Sensex falling 0.27%.

Economics

  • The EIA said crude oil inventories in the U.S. climbed by 4.633 million barrels in the week ended Feb. 14, compared to market estimates of a 3 million gain.
  • Initial jobless claims increased by 5,000 from the prior week to 219,000 in the week ending Feb. 15, versus estimates of 215,000.
  • The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index fell to 18.1 in February from 44.3 in the previous month.
