M/I Homes Inc was incorporated, through predecessor entities, in 1973 and commenced homebuilding activities in 1976. The Company is builders of single-family homes. Till now, the Company has delivered over 87,000 homes, including 3,472 in 2013. The Company consists of two distinct operations: homebuilding and financial services. The homebuilding operations is divided for reporting purposes into three reporting segments - the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions. In financial services operations support, its homebuilding operations by providing mortgage loans and title services to the customers of homebuilding operations and is reported as its own segment. The homebuilding operations comprise the substantial portion of its business, representing 97% of consolidated revenue in both 2013 and 2012. It designs, markets, construct and sells single-family homes, attached townhomes, and condominiums to first-time, move-up, empty-nester and luxury buyers. The financial services operations generate revenuefrom originating and selling mortgages and collecting fees for title insurance and closing services. It offers mortgage banking services to its homebuyers through its 100%-owned subsidiary, M/I Financial, LLC. (M/I Financial). It offer title services through subsidiaries that are either 100% or majority owned by the Company. Financial services operations accounted for 3% of the consolidated revenues in both 2013 and 2012. The Company has homebuilding operations in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; Tampa and Orlando, Florida; Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, Texas; Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina; and the Virginia and Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. The financial services operations competes with other mortgage lenders, including national, regional, and local mortgage bankers and brokers, banks, savings and loan associations, and other financial institutions, in the origination and sale of mortgage loans. The Company is subject to various local, state and federal (including FHA and VA) statutes, ordinances, rules and regulations concerning environmental, zoning, building, design, construction, sales, and similar matters.
