Sewing added that Germany would &quot;no longer be able to avert a recession&quot; after it became too dependent on Russian energy.
Speaking at a banking conference in Frankfurt, Sewing said Europe had learned how dangerous it was to be &quot;too dependent on individual countries or regions.&quot;
He also said Germany must now face the &quot;awkward question&quot; of dealing with China, given its &quot;increasing isolation and growing tensions.&quot;
&quot;Reducing this dependency will require a change no less fundamental than decoupling from Russian energy,&quot; Sewing said.
UniCredit SpA&#39;s&nbsp;(OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/uncff#OTC">UNCFF</a>) Chief Executive Andrea Orcel added to the economic concern saying Europe faced a &quot;relatively shallow&quot; recession followed by a rebound in 2024 or later.&nbsp;
He agreed that European banks lacked scale and that consolidation would happen eventually.
&quot;Size counts in banking &ndash; and if we don&#39;t want to hand over the playing field to the Americans, Europe must create the right conditions for big banks,&quot; he said.
&quot;The dominance of American banks is no law of nature,&quot; he added. According to UniCredit&#39;s Orcel, &quot;too much&quot; domestic consolidation is not good as it doesn&#39;t create the &quot;plumbing of financial services&quot; to support the economy.

Stocks That Hit 52-Week Highs On Tuesday

The shares of Italian banking giant UniCredit S.p.A. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/uncff#OTC">UNCFF</a>) dipped in Friday&#39;s trade in Milan as reports suggested that the company&#39;s chief executive officer Jean-Pierre Mustier was being considered for leading HSBC Holdings p.l.c. (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hsbc#NYSE">HSBC</a>).
<h3>What Happened</h3>
Bloomberg&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-20/unicredit-boss-mustier-emerges-as-contender-for-hsbc-ceo-role">reported</a> on Thursday that Mustier is one of the bankers being considered for the top role at rival London-based HSBC.
Mustier&#39;s appointment isn&#39;t final, according to Bloomberg, as others, including Noel Quinn, remain under consideration.
Quinn has led the company since British banker John Flint stepped down from the role in August last year based on &quot;mutual agreement&quot; with the board of management.
The company didn&#39;t name Quinn as the new chief during its February strategy update announcement fueling expectations that an outsider could be selected for the role.
HSBC has said that the next CEO may not be announced until August, Bloomberg noted.
Mustier has spent four years leading UniCredit. The 59-year old French executive was credited with a series of reforms that turned around the bank&#39;s fortune.
<h3>Price Action</h3>
UniCredit&#39;s shares traded 2.29% lower at $14.50 in Milan at press time on Friday. The stock closed 1.37% lower at $14.84 in the otc market on Thursday.
HSBC traded slightly higher at $7.21 in London at press time. The shares closed 0.17% lower at $36.17 in New York on Thursday.

Turkey&#39;s&nbsp;national currency, the lira, continues to trade near all-time lows against the U.S. dollar, and the country is <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45165629">approaching an economic crisis</a>, the BBC reported. Here&#39;s&nbsp;what investors need to know Monday morning.

<h3>Daza: Potential Credit Crisis</h3>
Turkey&#39;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/18/08/12184039/the-turkish-crisis-what-you-need-to-know-about-erdogan-the-lira-turkey">financial problems</a> are so large, they will require &quot;something very special to short-circuit the crisis,&quot; Daza said on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2018/08/13/turkeys-problems-could-mutate-into-credit-crisis-says-cio.html">CNBC&#39;s &quot;Squawk Box&quot; segment</a>&nbsp;Monday. As it stands now <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/topic/turkey">the country&#39;s </a>financial problems are limited to its currency, but the situation could transform into a credit crisis, as many&nbsp;Turkish&nbsp;companies owe debt denominated in U.S. dollars, he said.&nbsp;
Turkey&#39;s central bank holds the lowest level of net international reserves of all emerging markets with a very large current account deficit, Daza&nbsp;said. The government needs a significant amount of funding from abroad just to maintain its current spending needs, he said.&nbsp;
<h3>Deluard: 3 Companies With Biggest Exposure</h3>
The three companies with the largest exposure to Turkey&#39;s economy include France&#39;s&nbsp;BNP Paribas (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTC">BNPQY</a>), Italy&#39;s UniCredit SpA (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/uncff#OTC">UNCFF</a>), and Spain&#39;s Bureau Veritas SA (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bvrdf#OTC">BVRDF</a>), Deluard <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2018/08/13/turkeys-currency-decline.html">separately said</a> during Monday&#39;s &quot;Squawk Box&quot; segment.
It is&nbsp;important to keep in mind that&nbsp;bank&nbsp;exposure to Turkey comes from investments in joint ventures with local banks, Deluard said. European banks can simply &quot;walk away&quot; from the country if the currency decline continues and let their Turkish partners &quot;deal with the mess,&quot; he said.&nbsp;
Foreign banks will need to assume an unpleasant write-off in Turkey, but even under the worst-case scenario there is &quot;limited liability,&quot; he said. Many European banks are trading below one times their book value, which implies a scenario of this magnitude is already priced in, he said.&nbsp;
<h3>Newton: Don&#39;t Get Burned</h3>
In conjunction with Turkey&#39;s currency declines, the Turky Invststbl Mrkt (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tur#NASDAQ">TUR</a>) ETF is seeing its worst annual performance so far. Investors looking to buy the dip on a belief in limited downside&nbsp;may want to reconsider, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/10/turkish-slump-could-mean-a-bounce-but-be-careful-not-to-get-burned.html">Newton said</a> during a recent CNBC &quot;Trading Nation&quot; segment.
The ETF, which holds a basket of Turkish stocks, is flirting with the lowest levels seen since the 2008 and 2009 financial crisis, Newton&nbsp;said. From a&nbsp;short-term perspective, a &quot;capitulation-type low is potentially at hand,&quot;&nbsp;and from a technical point of view a bounce back to the $25 to $27 level could be seen, he said. In the intermediate-term, investors would need to see signs of stabilization before buying the ETF, as the downtrend is &quot;very well-established.&quot;
The expert said he &quot;wouldn&#39;t touch this with a 10-foot pole for anything more than three to five days.&quot;
