A Cybertruck owner's coffee-in-hand morning drive is turning into a viral snapshot of where Tesla and SpaceX technology may be headed, and of how far the rules still lag behind the hype.
On Oct. 6, 2026, the Tesla-focused account Teslaconomics shared a clip from inside his Cybertruck Cyberbeast as Full Self-Driving (Supervised) handled a commute through traffic. In the video, he holds a thermos and mug instead of the yoke, Starship content plays on the dash, and a phone mounted on the dash shows his connection stats. He said a Starlink Mini wired into the truck was delivering 169 Mbps download, 12 Mbps upload and 36 ms latency while moving. Replies split fast, with some calling the setup genuinely cool and others calling it arrogant, saying he deserved a ticket or that video on the dash crosses a line.
The numbers are self-reported, but they sit comfortably inside the 65 to 260 Mbps download range SpaceX advertises for the Mini. Tesla does not currently ship consumer vehicles with factory Starlink hardware, so setups like this one are aftermarket. That could change: on Tesla's second-quarter earnings call on July 22, 2026, Elon Musk said Starlink will be built into the Cybercab and eventually every Tesla in markets where the service is available.
The clip also highlights the gap between what the software can do and what drivers are allowed to do. Tesla classifies FSD (Supervised) as a Level 2 driver-assistance system that requires a fully attentive driver, and it costs $99 a month in the U.S. Tesla's own owner's manual describes its Theater streaming apps as a feature for use while parked. Handheld phone use behind the wheel remains illegal in most states whether or not driver assistance is engaged. Distracted driving killed 3,208 people in the U.S. in 2024, according to federal traffic safety data, and regulators opened a probe in October 2025 into FSD-equipped vehicles over reported traffic violations.
For investors, the bigger story is Tesla's push to make the car a connected, autonomous product rather than just hardware. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, reported on Oct. 2, while the company keeps pointing to FSD subscriptions, robotaxis and Starlink connectivity as its next growth engines. With the average U.S. one-way commute at 27.2 minutes in 2024, every minute drivers can reclaim is part of the pitch.
Whether this looks like the future or a reckless shortcut may depend on how fast Tesla can move FSD from supervised to truly unsupervised in personal cars.
