Market researchers continue to reduce their annual shipment expectations for Apple's (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) iPad.

According to market intelligence firm <a href="http://press.trendforce.com/press/20131024-920.html">TrendForce</a>, Apple will ship a total of 70.5 million iPads by the end of 2013. This is down from TrendForce's previous expectation of 72.1 million units.

TrendForce has also reduced its iPad market share expectations to 37 percent (versus 44 percent achieved in 2012). This full-year estimate is a slight improvement over Apple's position during the second quarter, at which time the company commanded <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/07/3783391/apple-to-ship-4m-fewer-ipads-after-market-share-drops-to-35-aapl">35.5 percent of the global tablet market</a>.

When the year began, Apple was expected to ship as many as 100 million tablets. That estimate was <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/03/3397511/apple-rumored-to-sell-fewer-ipads-than-expected-in-2013">reduced to 88 million</a> by the first week of March.

At the time, iPad sales were still going strong. During the March quarter, Apple sold <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/04/23Apple-Reports-Second-Quarter-Results.html">19.5 million iPads</a> -- nearly eight million more units than were sold during the same quarter in 2012. The first-generation iPad Mini is being <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/02/3368434/are-90-of-apples-customers-shifting-to-the-ipad-mini">credited</a> with Apple's success.

The growth spurt did not last forever, however. iPad sales dropped roughly 20 percent during the June quarter, when Apple sold <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/07/23Apple-Reports-Third-Quarter-Results.html">14.6 million units</a>. During the same quarter in 2012, Apple sold 17 million units.

Before this decline was announced, numerous reports claimed that the iPad Mini -- the leader of Apple tablet sales -- would experience some declines. While it was unclear if lower sales demand was to blame, Apple was expected to ship <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/05/3600353/ipad-minis-anticipated-declines-are-reinforced-by-new-report">fewer iPad Mini units</a>.

At one point iPad Mini shipments were rumored to be <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/04/3505107/ipad-mini-shipments-may-fall-30">reduced by 30 percent</a>.

In June, Quantum International (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/quan#OTC">QUAN</a>) -- a robots company that now develops iPad cases -- made the bold claim that Apple would defy expectations and ship <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/06/3711830/apples-ipad-shipments-predicted-to-reach-300-million-units-in-2013-aapl">300 million tablets in 2013</a>.

Others within the industry have been a bit more conservative.

In the months and weeks leading up to Apple's <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/10/4012088/apple-announces-new-macs-new-ipads-and-offers-one-million-apps">highly-anticipated iPad event</a>, rumors claimed that the iPad Mini 2 would be <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/07/3734110/ipad-mini-2-release-uncertain-as-apple-targets-ipad-5-release-for-september-aapl">delayed</a> or ship in <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/10/3965747/ipad-mini-delay-could-hurt-apple-boost-kindle-fire-hdx-aapl-amzn">very limited quantities</a>.

The latter rumor seems to be coming true. While Apple announced that the iPad Air will be released on Friday, November 1, the company has not committed to a release date for the iPad Mini with Retina Display. Consumers are currently told that it will arrive "later" in November.

Apple is rumored to ship <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/10/4015214/apple-rumored-to-ship-10-million-ipad-air-units-in-q4">10 million iPad Air units</a> during the fourth quarter.

Shipment numbers for the iPad Mini with Retina Display remain a mystery.

In June, Quantum International (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/quan#OTC">QUAN</a>) (OTC Pink: QUAN) made the bold prediction that Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) would ship <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/06/3711830/apples-ipad-sales-predicted-to-reach-300-million-units">300 million tablets</a> in 2013.

This figure seemed to have been diminished the moment Apple announced its <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/07/3783391/apple-to-ship-4m-fewer-ipads-after-market-share-drops-to-35">June quarter sales results</a>. iPad sales fell to 14.6 million units versus 17 million in the year-ago period and 19.5 million units during the March quarter.

That sales decline may prevent Apple from selling <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/03/3397511/apple-rumored-to-sell-fewer-ipads-than-expected-in-2013">88 million tablets</a> in 2013, as previously estimated.

Thus far, global tablet sales have been impressive this year but far from record-breaking. All told, there have been roughly <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/07/3791142/android-windows-phone-tablets-rise-18-as-apples-ipad-declines">34 million iPads</a> sold by Apple and another 28 million tablets shipped by other manufacturers.

Despite these low numbers, NPD's <a href="http://www.displaysearch.com/cps/rde/xchg/displaysearch/hs.xsl/130730_shipments_of_tablet_pcs_expected_to_more_than_double_those_of_notebook_pcs.asp">DisplaySearch</a> has forecasted global tablet shipments of more than 250 million units this year. In 2014, DisplaySearch researchers expect that number to jump to 364 million units.

At the rate tablet shipments are going, manufacturers would have to send another 200 million units to retail (between now and December 31) in order to meet the 2013 estimate.

Assuming that everything remains constant and that no other mobile operating systems appear, iOS and Android are likely to continue to dominate. Thus, their sales should skyrocket if the market grows fast enough to demand the shipment increase.

To put that into perspective, current iOS tablet sales and non-iOS tablet shipments are just over 62 million units combined. Based on DisplaySearch's numbers, tablet shipments could rise more than 300 percent before the year's end.

That being the case, Apple could ultimately sell more than 100 million tablets.

However, it is not clear how Apple or any other manufacturer could pull this off. The DisplaySearch report cites the usual reasons for high shipment expectations (ex: tablets are cheaper, contain superior battery life and generally sell better than notebook PCs). But the report does not provide a catalyst for the sales spike.

The release of new tablets, such as Google's (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/goog#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) next-generation Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini 2, could provide meaningful growth. But they may not be able to push sales -- or merely shipments -- high enough to reach these lofty figures.

Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) is frequently predicted to sell record-breaking numbers of its newest products.

Quantum International (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/quan#OTC">QUAN</a>) (OTC Pink: QUAN), a robotics company that recently announced that it will produce "revolutionary iPad cases <a href="http://markets.financialcontent.com/ir/?Module=MediaViewer&GUID=24457179&Ticker=QUAN">that enhance the tablet</a>," is very confident in Apple's future success. The firm has <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/13/06/b3711223/ipad-sales-forecast-boosts-quans-opportunities">predicted</a> that Apple will ship 300 million tablets before the end of the year.

To put that into perspective, Apple sold <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/04/3538937/apple-sold-12-5-million-ipad-mini-units-in-q2">19.5 million tablets</a> during the March quarter. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant would have to ship an additional 280.5 million units in 2013 to reach Quantum's predicted figure.

As of January 2013, Apple had sold <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/01/29Apple-Increases-iPad-with-Retina-Display-to-128GB.html">more than 120 million iPads</a> worldwide. With sales from the March quarter factored in, Apple should be up to 140 million units.

That is the total number of iPads that consumers have purchased since the device was released in 2010. It is an impressive, record-breaking achievement that no other tablet maker has come close to reaching. It is also less than half the number of units Quantum expects Apple to ship in a single year.

This begs the question: if 300 million people did not want to buy an iPad over the last 36 months, why would they want one now?

Sales demand aside, it may not be physically possible for Apple to produce that many units in 2013. For example, one report claimed that iPad 5 production<a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/06/3645939/ipad-5-production-could-delay-ipad-mini-2">could delay the release</a> of the iPad Mini 2. If Apple cannot manufacture enough units of both products to release them at the same time, how could it ever produce enough tablets to ship 300 million units?

Apple was previously rumored to ship 100 million tablets this year -- 60 million full-size units and 40 million iPad Minis. While iPad Mini demand has recently increased (55 million are now expected to be sold), full-size iPad demand has <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/02/3368434/are-90-of-apples-customers-shifting-to-the-ipad-mini">plummeted</a>. Consequently, Apple may only ship <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/03/3397511/apple-rumored-to-sell-fewer-ipads-than-expected-in-2013">33 million</a> 10-inch tablets this year.

With all of this in mind, Quantum's figure sounds like it may be impossible to reach.
