Dave Ramsey Shares Two Things That Make Him Uncomfortable: 'I'm A Dinosaur'

Dave Ramsey has helped people with their finances for decades through his bestselling books and "The Ramsey Show." The financial guru has encouraged people to get their finances under control, and that often requires people to get out of their comfort zones.

However, Ramsey recently had the tables flipped on him. He received a question from one of his co-hosts about how he's embracing being uncomfortable. The conversation was framed around how you have to make yourself uncomfortable to grow, and Ramsey was quite honest in his response.

"The entire world is now digital, and I'm a dinosaur," he responded.

Adapting To A Digital World

Ramsey admits to not knowing much about technology, especially compared to younger generations. He mentioned that he grew up with a black rotary phone with a cord to the wall to demonstrate that the digital world isn't native to him.

However, Ramsey went on to explain that 600 of the 1,100 employees in his building are in their 20s. He has surrounded himself with talented workers who are digital natives. Although there is a knowledge gap in digital technology, Ramsey's openness about this issue revealed some valuable lessons.

The first key lesson is that Ramsey surrounds himself with people who know what he doesn't. While Ramsey admitted that he doesn't like to be the "dumbest guy in the room," it's better to be in a room with smarter people than it is to be in a room on your own.

The second key lesson is that Ramsey still uses technology because he realizes it's important. He understands social media, websites, online ads, and other digital marketing channels are important.

He seeks help in areas he doesn't know so he can focus on his strengths. That's also part of running a business. It's normal for business owners to hire workers to save them time and address skill gaps.

Succession Planning

Ramsey also shared that succession planning is a component that makes him uncomfortable. He wants to make sure it goes smoothly, but this point highlights how your goals change as you get older.

When Ramsey was younger, he focused on building wealth and getting out of debt. Now that he has accumulated a fortune and a strong brand, his goal has shifted toward succession. Ramsey mentioned in the interview that he's planning how to hand off the brand influence to the Ramsey personalities and the internal influence to the leadership team.

Ramsey's son serves as the company's president. They started with 50/50 stakes, but the son now owns 80% of the company. Ramsey plans to gradually get less involved in the business. It's a necessary step for the business to survive after Ramsey, but he doesn't like the shift. Ramsey referred to it as "uncomfortable, but necessary."

Ramsey wants to make sure that his team can handle the company without him. He mentioned that it's intellectually rewarding to see his family and team gradually gain more control as the succession plan unfolds.
