Dave Ramsey has provided financial insights for many callers on "The Ramsey Show," but few of those calls made him laugh as much as this one. The story centers around a young couple that is about to get married. They currently live in the boyfriend's parents' house and have been using the snowball method to pay off debt.
She has a $27,000 car loan, while the boyfriend has debt on a car loan and a credit card that was used for business expenses. She makes $30,000 per year at the bank but is in the process of growing her career, so she should raise her earnings soon. Meanwhile, the boyfriend makes $60,000 to $70,000 per year in the construction industry.

At some point, Ramsey suggested the couple get an apartment, but they have a unique situation. The couple also owns two donkeys and breeds them for extra cash. The couple had to scale down the donkey breeding business, and Ramsey believes it's best to turn to a new chapter.
"Sell two donkeys, get married, and move out," Ramsey said.

Selling The Donkeys Gives The Couple More Housing Options
Having the two donkeys severely limits the couple's housing options. You can't walk with two donkeys in an 800-square-foot apartment unit. Ramsey asked the caller if she knows how much the donkeys are worth. It turns out she can get about $2,100 if she sells both of them.
"We don't revolve our major life decisions around donkeys in the backyard," Ramsey exclaimed right before laughing about the comedic elements of the situation.
The extra $2,100 can go toward the couple's debt. It can also help them start a family sooner and move out of the boyfriend's parents' house.
However, it doesn't mean the couple has to give up on the donkey business. Ramsey said that the couple could eventually restart the donkey business if that's their dream. However, Ramsey believes that the caller's priorities will change when she becomes a parent.

Stay Focused On Career Growth
Selling the donkeys won't only give them more housing options, but they can also focus more on their careers. The caller will be able to focus more time on securing a higher-paying job at the bank or consider other job opportunities. Furthermore, the boyfriend may raise his earnings if he can reallocate the time he put into the donkey business into his construction work.
Career growth leads to higher earnings, which will get the couple out of debt faster. Furthermore, they can start to invest more money. Maxing out their annual retirement account contributions and saving additional money will put them in a better position when they are ready to lead a family.
The couple is already doing a good job with the debt snowball method. They seem to have good money habits. However, selling the two donkeys can help them boost their income and focus on their careers instead of side projects with limited upside. You can still make a full-time income with a side hustle, but you also don't want to have too many shiny objects that end up limiting how much you can earn.
