Humana Inc. (NYSE:HUM) today unveiled its "Bold Goal – 2017 Progress Report." The report details progress the company made, together with physicians and local community nonprofit, government and business partners, toward improving the health of the communities it serves nationwide. The report can be accessed by clicking here.

Nearly two years ago, Humana announced its Bold Goal: to make the communities we serve 20 percent healthier by 2020 because we make it easy for people to achieve their best health.

Humana uses the CDC's population health management tool known as Healthy Days to benchmark community health and measure progress. The measurement takes into account how a person is feeling holistically, including his or her mental and physical health.

Bold Goal Progress

Humana's Bold Goal results are as follows:

  • People nationwide are experiencing more Healthy Days. Humana Healthy Days results showed a 2 percent improvement on a national basis among its membership.
  • Bold Goal communities are leading the way. Humana has continued to work with Bold Goal communities to support local public health and care-intervention programs. This collaboration has helped improve Healthy Days by a margin of 3 percent. Six of Humana's seven Bold Goal communities have achieved improvements in Healthy Days.
  • Continued progress achieved in Humana's workforce. Humana's 50,000 associates (employees) are still on track to improve their overall Healthy Days by 20 percent by the end of 2017. Humana remains focused on identifying associate experiences that can be cascaded and personalized into local communities.

Lessons Learned

Through its Bold Goal program, Humana has found that making communities healthier demands an integrated approach.

"Improving the health of an entire community is difficult, and no one person or organization can do it alone," said Bruce D. Broussard, Humana President and CEO. "The progress we've made is encouraging, and we owe a large part of that success to the many different physicians and community members who have come together to make Humana's Bold Goal a reality. Putting a stop to preventable diseases and improving the health and the lives of the people we serve are efforts worth fighting for, and we will continue to take what we've learned to add more Healthy Days into people's lives."

Creating lasting behavior change in the communities Humana serves also requires highly local and holistic care solutions that focus not just on clinical measures but social determinants of health. This demands a deep understanding of the fabric of local communities.

This approach, which Humana has emphasized in its Bold Goal communities, specifically addresses how social determinants such as food insecurity, health literacy and transportation can significantly impact an individual's health. For example, 5.4 million seniors in the U.S. are food insecure, and 43 percent feel lonely on a regular basis.

Key Regional Findings

The 2017 Bold Goal Progress Report details Humana's collaborative efforts with physicians and community partners in places such as San Antonio, Louisville, Tampa Bay, Broward County (Florida), New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Knoxville.

Roy A. Beveridge, M.D., Humana's Chief Medical Officer, whose organization is responsible for leading the implementation of the Bold Goal, noted the significant impact that Humana and its physician and clinician partners have played in these local communities.

"This measurable improvement in population health is a direct result of addressing and understanding social determinants that are so important in helping people improve their health," said Dr. Beveridge. "From the start, we knew this would be a complex and challenging journey. We are proud to have worked with countless physicians and clinicians across the country to engage communities in preventive care. Physicians and clinicians have been engaged, not just within the four walls of their office, but the community at large. In every sense, this has been an integrated effort, and we believe this work exemplifies Humana's ever-growing momentum toward improving population health."

Last year, Humana stated that it would band together with community, academic, physician and health care partners in Bold Goal communities to create more informed, localized solutions to specific health challenges. Below are 2017 Bold Goal Progress Report results and findings based on this work:

  • San Antonio sets the stage. As the first Bold Goal community, the city of San Antonio experienced a 9 percent decrease in the number of Unhealthy Days – a result of many efforts, including addressing social issues in the community such as food insecurity and limited access to behavioral health services. Through a telepsychiatry pilot program and food insecurity screening implemented in primary care offices, these health barriers were directly addressed. Improvements in diabetes management were also achieved through collaboration between Humana, the San Antonio Health Advisory Board and the American Diabetes Association.
  • Tampa Bay addresses food insecurity. The community of Tampa Bay, one of Humana's largest Bold Goal communities, has been working to address the issue of food insecurity through initiatives led by primary care physicians. The Tampa Bay Health Advisory Board and Humana, in partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay, the University of South Florida and other community partners, developed the Hunger Action Alliance to confront this issue.
  • Louisville sees both progress and challenges. Efforts by Humana and community partners to address respiratory illness, depression and behavioral health were launched, including the Bold Moves Against Suicide Summit, which brought together more than 200 thought leaders, physicians and community partners to address the issue. However, while Louisville has the fewest number of Unhealthy Days compared to other Bold Goal communities, the city did not see an improvement in Healthy Days from 2015 to 2016. Humana has a number of initiatives planned for 2017, including intervention programs in partnership with the Louisville Health Advisory Board, to help accelerate Louisville's progress.

Moving Forward

Thanks to the support of physician leaders, businesses, nonprofits, and government and public health organizations, Humana continues to make progress toward its 2020 Bold Goal. More Healthy Days are being experienced nationally, and new programs addressing both local health issues and social determinants of health have been launched.

Moving forward, 2017 priority issues for Bold Goal communities include diabetes, behavioral health, food insecurity, loneliness and social isolation. Key learnings from local programs enacted to address these challenges will be expanded nationally. Humana is also evaluating new communities to expand its Bold Goal program. The latest expansion is Jacksonville, Florida, where a clinical town hall meeting recently took place. Approximately 250 health care, business and community leaders participated in the town hall.
