Bernie Sanders and Adam Schiff Sound Alarm As Rogue AI Agents Enter Bank Accounts, Warn of Financial Chaos: ‘Pause AI NOW!’

On Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) raised concerns about rogue AI agents accessing bank accounts and potentially threatening financial security, urging urgent action to contain the risks.

Banks Scramble to Block Unauthorized AI Agents

Major U.S. banks, including Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) and Citigroup (NYSE:C), are restricting third-party AI agents amid concerns that the tools could access customer accounts and take actions beyond users’ instructions, Axios reported.

Some agents reportedly use customers’ login credentials to access accounts, potentially violating banks’ terms of service. Executives are also concerned that agents may attempt transactions or contact customer service systems without clear authorization.

The risks could be especially serious when agents can transfer funds or make purchases. Banks are struggling to distinguish between legitimate, user-directed activity and potentially rogue behavior.

In a statement to the publication, a Chase spokesperson advised customers not to share their usernames and passwords. A Morgan Stanley spokesperson said the bank had not observed instances of "rogue AI agents accessing our platforms."

Several banks are exploring read-only access, which would allow AI agents to analyze financial information without moving money or initiating transactions.

Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Sanders Demands AI Pause as Schiff Calls for Guardrails

Responding to the report, Sanders warned that the technology could put consumers and the broader financial system at risk.

"This is insane. We cannot allow AI agents to go into your bank account and act independently without your authorization," Sanders wrote on X.

He added that unchecked AI could endanger "the entire global financial system" and called for an immediate halt, saying, "Pause AI NOW!"

Schiff similarly warned that rogue agents pose risks beyond banking, extending to utilities, health care systems and other critical infrastructure.

"The time to pass mandatory industry-wide AI guardrails is now," Schiff wrote on X, urging Congress to act before the risks intensify.

Banks Face Pressure to Balance AI Benefits and Security

Financial institutions face growing pressure to accommodate customers who want AI agents to manage routine tasks while preventing unauthorized transactions and data exposure.

Although banks are investing in cybersecurity measures and preparing contingency plans for potential incidents, AI’s rapid evolution is complicating their efforts.
