How TikTok Bill 'Will Benefit' App Users, Explains Key GOP Senator

In a recent push to address national security concerns, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has taken a stand on the future of TikTok in the United States, advocating for legislation that could reshape the app’s ownership.

What Happened: Cruz has expressed that the contentious bill requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app will be advantageous for its users. The Hill reported on Wednesday that Cruz, following a classified briefing, argued the bill would prevent Chinese Communist Party influence on the app and enhance user experience.

"For the people who use TikTok and enjoy it: This is not about getting rid of that," he said, adding that it was about transferring its control away from China.

Cruz emphasized the importance of protecting the privacy of the 170 million American TikTok users from potential espionage and surveillance by the Chinese government.

"I think it is very important," Cruz continued.

"And will benefit the users of TikTok and everyone else, too."

Cruz also voiced concerns over propaganda and harmful content being disseminated to children via TikTok. The bill, which has been described as a “ban” by critics, actually provides ByteDance with 165 days to divest and allow TikTok to operate in the U.S. under new ownership.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Vice Chair Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) are working to clarify that the bill aims to safeguard the creative and monetary opportunities offered by TikTok without Chinese manipulation. Despite TikTok’s campaign against the bill, it passed swiftly through the House with strong bipartisan support.

Cruz anticipates that the Commerce Committee will review the bill with an open amendment process. He acknowledges the need for adjustments to the House’s language but recognizes the urgency in addressing the security threat posed by the app’s current ownership.

Why It Matters: Amid the debate over TikTok’s future in the U.S., President Joe Biden has indicated his willingness to sign legislation that could lead to a ban, inciting pushback from young voters. This demographic, which heavily utilizes TikTok not only for entertainment but also as a news source, is calling on lawmakers to consider the app’s cultural significance.

Moreover, the potential ban on TikTok has international implications, as China holds the power to block the sale of TikTok, thereby increasing tension between Beijing and Washington. This standoff adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two global powers.
