SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday denied moon landing conspiracy theories, terming the moon landings during the 1960s and 1970s under the Apollo program as “real.”
What Happened: Several conspiracy theories claim that parts or all of the Apollo program and associated moon landings were staged. Some even claim that astronauts did not actually land on the moon but instead allege it was staged by NASA in collaboration with Hollywood.
“It is insane how many people have asked me if the moon landings are fake,” Musk wrote on X. “They are indeed obviously real.”
The SpaceX CEO said that the six crewed moon landings that were part of the Apollo program are “as real” as the fact that the U.S. hasn’t been back to the moon since.
“We should have built a permanent base on the moon and Mars by now!,” Musk said.
Why It Matters: Musk’s rocket manufacturing company is currently developing Starship, a fully reusable launch vehicle expected to land people and cargo back on the Moon for the first time in over fifty years as part of NASA’s Artemis program.
The United States is currently expecting to send astronauts to the surface of the moon by September 2026 with the Artemis III mission. The last time humans set foot on the Moon was in 1972 with Apollo 17. Since then, no crew has traveled beyond low-Earth orbit.
