Epic Drop Test: iPhone 15 Pro Max Vs. Galaxy S23 Ultra — Which Is A More Sturdy Flagship?

In a drop test conducted by the YouTube channel PhoneBuff, the durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was put on trial, giving a peek into their sturdiness when faced with real-world drops and impacts.

What Happened: Earlier this week, PhoneBuff posted a video on his channel titled “iPhone 15 Pro Max vs. Galaxy S23 Ultra Drop Test!”

The test comprised four challenging rounds, each designed to simulate real-world scenarios where these premium smartphones might suffer a fall.

Round I: Backdrop Battle

In the first round of this epic drop test, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra faced a direct fall on their backs from a certain height. The results were telling:

The iPhone’s rear glass took a heavy hit, shattering and exhibiting a spider web of cracks that spread across the device. In contrast, while still suffering some damage, the Galaxy contained most of it in its bottom left and top right corner.

Both phones’ camera lenses got scuffed due to concrete debris.

“An easy win for the Galaxy in round number one,” the YouTuber said.

Round II: Corner Drop Challenge

In the second round, the phones were dropped on their corners. Interestingly, the iPhone’s titanium frame created a spark on impact, but it held up better than the Galaxy’s aluminum frame, which dug into the concrete.

However, the iPhone’s rear glass began to fall apart, with a noticeable chunk missing from the point of impact.

This round was a close call, and it’s safe to say it was a tie.

Round III: Face-Down Face-Off

Round three involved a face-down drop, where both phones were sent plummeting onto their screens. Unfortunately, this round didn’t bode well for either device. Chunks of glass flew as the iPhone and the Galaxy both shattered.

The iPhone’s thinner bezels and slightly rounded edges might have contributed to its less-than-stellar performance, with spider-webbed cracks spreading across the screen.

The Galaxy, with its curved display, exhibited even deeper cracks along its edges. However, both phones remained fully functional, with the iPhone narrowly edging out the Galaxy in this round.

Round IV: Bonus Round – Steel Impact Test

In a final bonus round, the phones faced a drop onto steel to test their shock resistance.

As expected, the iPhone’s rear glass shattered, while the Galaxy maintained a more stable appearance.

Remarkably, both phones remained fully functional despite some damage, with their respective biometric features, like the face ID on the iPhone and the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy, still in working order.

It was another close call, but the Galaxy held up slightly better, making it the round winner.

Conclusion: The Scorecard

After four grueling rounds of drops and impacts, the scorecard reveals an overall advantage for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Although both phones took a beating, the Galaxy managed to hold up slightly better across the tests.

However, both devices sustained damage, emphasizing the importance of investing in a protective case if you’re concerned about safeguarding your valuable smartphone.

“A really close battle, but the Galaxy emerged as the winner in this drop test,” the YouTuber concluded, adding, “Both phones took a toll, so I’d definitely consider getting a case if you’re worried about dropping your phone.”
