ZenniHome — The More Sustainable, Smarter And Cheaper Alternative To Tiny Homes Solving The Housing Inventory Crisis

As the housing market struggles with unaffordable prices and a limited inventory, one startup is looking to take the housing construction market to the 21st century: ZenniHome

The Arizona-based startup was founded in 2020 by former Arizona Sen. Bob Worsley, an author and entrepreneur, and Stephen D. James, a designer of eco-friendly communities. ZenniHome aims to tackle the housing crisis with its innovative and multifunctional prefab homes, starting with its flagship product the Denizen.

The housing market has been grappling with a severe affordability crisis for years — more than 75% of homes on the market are too expensive for middle-income buyers. Rising materials costs, supply chain issues and labor shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated the problem, but it existed long before the pandemic hit. The housing demands of a continually increasing population have outpaced the construction of new homes, leading to soaring prices and increased rents. The company even recently launched on Wefunder and has raised over $1 million from retail investors.

Tiny Homes As A Starting Point

Tiny homes have been praised for their multifunctionality, offering an attractive solution for people seeking a simpler and more sustainable lifestyle. But for many, tiny living is not a practical long-term solution because of limited space and lack of functionality. ZenniHome recognized the potential in tiny homes but set a new goal for itself: to maximize functionality within a compact space.

ZenniHome's Denizen is a game-changer in the prefab home market. Resembling a container structure, the Denizen is a modular and prefabricated home designed to adapt and transform to meet various needs. Each room in the house can be reconfigured to suit different purposes, making the most of its limited space.

The secret lies in ZenniHome's patented use of robotic technology in construction, enabling the creation of adaptive space. Despite its compact 320 square feet (30 square meters), the Denizen claims to offer the functionality of a fully furnished 900-square-foot (86.3-square-meter) home.

Green Credentials

The Denizen and its larger counterparts, the Citizen and ZenCity, are not shipping containers. Instead, they are made of steel, offering superior durability and a smaller environmental footprint. ZenniHome sources steel from an abandoned coal plant on Navajo land in Arizona, giving the project an eco-friendly edge.

Functionality Meets Technology

In addition to its adaptability, the Denizen boasts a range of smart features. Each unit comes equipped with digital door locks, smart lights, security cameras, a video-audio system, LED lighting and a thermostat. Optional features include Starlink broadband internet, solar panels, inverters, batteries and a watermaker, allowing the home to function off-grid.

ZenniHome adopts a unique approach known as Home as a Service (HaaS). This means that every unit is built and assembled at its factory in Page, Arizona, and comes fully furnished with appliances and finishes. Clients can configure their homes online, selecting the furniture and features that suit their needs.

The Denizen starts at $90,000 while the larger Citizen is priced from $125,000.

A Solution To The Housing Crisis

ZenniHome's Denizen presents an alternative to traditional tiny homes, providing a practical, multifunctional and affordable solution to the housing inventory crisis. Its innovative use of robotic technology, coupled with smart features and green credentials, sets it apart in the prefab housing market. With ZenniHome's dedication to transforming small spaces into versatile homes, it offers some hope for those seeking an attainable, yet transformative living experience. As production gets underway, potential homeowners await the chance to embrace a new way of living with ZenniHome’s Living Transformed concept.
