Pet Insurance in Illinois: An Overview

If you’re a pet owner in Illinois, you can save yourself the hassle of dealing with exorbitant vet bills with an affordable insurance policy. First, check out a few key stats from the North American Pet Health Insurance Association

Number of households with pets: 85 million

Amount spent on pet bills annually: $15.25 billion

Average cost of pet insurance annually: $168 to $1,176 (depending on the tier)

But even with pet insurance, you’ll have to pay out of pocket to cover the cost of care. When your pet receives treatment, you can submit a claim to the insurance provider for reimbursement. The insurance provider will review the claim to confirm the services rendered qualify under the plan. Once it’s approved, funds will be deposited to your bank account or sent to you via paper check.

Coverage levels vary by plan. You can select a policy that covers you 100%, but you’ll pay higher premiums than you would with a plan that only offers 60% coverage.

You’ll also be responsible for the deductible, or the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before coverage kicks in. Some pet insurance plans offer no deductibles, while others can go as high as $1,000. The higher the deductible, the lower the premiums. But you want to have the cash on hand to cover this amount in the event if you need to file a claim.

Claims won’t be processed at the tap of a fingertip, but you won't have to wait too long for reimbursement. Most claims are completed within a few business days. If your claim is complex or the insurance provider requests additional information, the processing window could be much longer.

The insurance provider also has the right to deny the claim if it doesn’t meet the standards for reimbursement per the policies outlined in the plan.

What Does Pet Insurance Typically Cover?

Most pet insurance policies cover accidents and illnesses for your dog or cat. If you have an exotic animal, like an iguana, ferret, bird, reptile or rabbit, you can also purchase coverage under an exotic pet insurance policy.

  • Accident coverage applies if your pet is involved in an accident and sustains injuries. For example, if your dog eats a poisonous plant, swallows an oversized ball or breaks a limb, the cost of care may be covered.
  • Illness coverage applies when your pet suffers from an unexpected illness, like an infection or cancer not related to an underlying medical condition.

Not all pet insurance policies are the same. Some providers offer both coverages under 1 policy, while others offer accident-only plans.

Select plans also cover routine care, prescription drugs and preventive surgeries. They are referred to as “insurance with embedded wellness” policies. You may have to spend a bit more to purchase these plans.

You may have to go through a waiting period before your pet is covered. This prevents pet owners from purchasing coverage if their pet has fallen ill or been involved in an accident. A waiting period may also apply for select medical conditions.

Some exclusions may apply. In most instances, preexisting conditions and select chronic conditions usually aren’t covered under pet insurance plans. You may also have to pay out-of-pocket for rabies vaccinations.

3 Reasons to Buy Pet Insurance in Illinois

It’s not hard to come up with a long list of reasons to buy pet insurance, and here’s what’s at the top of our list:

  1. The monthly premiums are affordable, and it’s possible to get adequate coverage for under $100 per month. (Quick note: Coverage is offered up to the annual maximum of the plan. Any expenses incurred over this amount won’t be covered under by the policy).
  2. It helps reduce out-of-pocket costs of major medical treatments, including radiation therapy and surgery.
  3. You’re allowed to select your provider as there are no network restrictions. But the veterinarian must be licensed for the claim to be eligible for reimbursement.
