Cannabis businesses are increasingly stepping up their community involvement, addressing pressing social issues and fostering positive local connections. During a national crisis of overcrowded animal shelters, one Chicago dispensary is making efforts to help.
Chicago’s Alarming Shelter Statistics
Animal shelters across the U.S. are grappling with an overwhelming influx of stray dogs, exacerbated by holidays like the Fourth of July. Nationally, shelters have reported increased stray admissions and euthanasia rates. In 2023, Shelter Animals Count estimates that 6.5 million cats and dogs entered shelters and rescues across America.
From January to April 2024, Chicago Animal Care and Control euthanized 669 animals, a notable increase from the previous year. Stray animal intake during this period also rose by about 450, a 16% jump from the previous year. Factors such as mild winters, which contribute to more animals being outside and breeding, have intensified the problem.
Ivy Hall's Dog Adoption Days
Amid this national crisis, Ivy Hall, a dog-friendly neighborhood cannabis retailer in Illinois, is stepping up with a community-driven initiative. Recognizing the pressing need to address shelter overcrowding, Ivy Hall has partnered with local adoption agencies to launch Dog Adoption Days throughout July. This initiative transforms their dispensaries into adoption centers, aiming to find homes for many of these animals.
In addition to hosting adoption events, Ivy Hall will donate $3 to participating animal shelters for every purchase of Dogwalkers Pre-Rolls made in July. This initiative not only raises funds but also promotes awareness about the shelter crisis.
