Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in his annual financial disclosure forms acknowledged that he undertook at least three trips aboard Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow's private plane in 2022.
Donald Trump's niece Mary Trump in a Substack post on Friday weighed in on the development.
What Happened: “Thomas makes the gobsmacking claim that it is us, the American people, who forced him to fly on private planes due to security concerns raised after the Dobbs decision,” Mary Trump noted.
The former president's niece, who is a psychologist by profession, said, “I truly believe he has committed ‘ethical lapses.'”
From the time Thomas joined the Supreme Court, there was never any doubt that his votes always advance the agenda of the far right whenever possible, Mary Trump said.
“No, the gifts are rewards for his continuing to toe the line — and insurance that he will continue to do so,” she said, adding “[his] behavior over the decades has been mind-bogglingly corrupt.”
System To Be Blamed? Every member of the federal judiciary is subject to a code of conduct except Supreme Court justices, Mary Trump wrote. The Democrats’ efforts to pass legislation to change this have, in the past, been shot down by Republicans, she said.
The psychologist also noted that there has been opposition to the idea of expanding the Supreme Court to restore its legitimacy.
The “partisanship and untrustworthiness” of the Supreme Court can be laid directly at the feet of the six justices on the right, Mary Trump said, referring to the high court’s conservative members.
She said Democrats need to focus on the importance of the Supreme Court during the election season.
“We need to convince people that the only way to keep cruel and corrupt judges and justices off the bench is to elect politicians who refuse to nominate and confirm them,” Mary Trump said.
“It would also help if we start making the case for expanding the court.”
