With a Jan. 15 date for the state caucus, Iowa continues to be a key state to watch in the 2024 presidential election.
A look at two election polls reveals former President Donald Trump has a comfortable lead in the state, but one shows him losing support while the other shows him gaining.
Here's a look at the state of Iowa and other races for the Republican party.
What Happened: A recent national election poll from Morning Consult found Trump to have a 53-point lead over his Republican competitors in a race to win the party's nomination for president in the 2024 election.
Morning Consult also breaks out individual states as part of its 2024 election coverage and its recent poll for the state of Iowa shows Trump trending in the wrong direction.
Here's a look at how Republican voters in the state would vote today:
Donald Trump: 50%
Ron DeSantis: 18%
Vivek Ramaswamy: 13%
Nikki Haley: 10%
The latest poll saw Trump decline from 57% in the month of October to 50% in the month of November. The 50% total also marked the lowest monthly total for Trump for the state in 2023.
DeSantis gained three percentage points in the latest poll, which comes as he was endorsed by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds in November.
A newly released poll from Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom for Iowa shows Trump topping the 50% level and gaining from the previous month.
The results of the poll are:
Donald Trump: 51%
Ron DeSantis: 19%
Nikki Haley: 16%
Vivek Ramaswamy: 5%
Chris Christie: 4%
The new poll shows a large lead for Trump and a large gain of eight percentage points from the 43% he had in the previous poll for the state.
DeSantis gained three percentage points from the last poll and broke a tie in the last poll with Haley to move back into second place by himself.
Haley, who had gone from 6% to 16% between August to October, held steady at 16%, falling to third place.
"The field may have shrunk, but it may have made Donald Trump even stronger than he was," pollster J. Ann Selzer, who helped conduct the poll said. "I would call his lead commanding at this point."
Selzer said despite candidates dropping out, it had not benefitted DeSantis or Haley that much in the race against Trump.

Why It's Important: While Iowa will be a key test given its early position in the 2024 calendar, Trump is faring strong in other state polls conducted by Morning Consult.
Here's a look at several of the key state polls shared by the polling company.
Nevada: Trump 67%, DeSantis 10%, Ramaswamy 10%, Haley 9%
South Carolina: Trump 57%, Haley 19%, DeSantis 13%, Ramaswamy 6%
Arizona: Trump 64%, DeSantis 11%, Haley 9%, Ramaswamy 7%
Florida: Trump 60%, DeSantis 23%, Haley 8%, Ramaswamy 5%
Georgia: Trump 66%, DeSantis 14%, Haley 10%, Ramaswamy 6%
Trump's lead at 50% in Iowa is one of his smallest of the states tracked by Morning Consult. Most states see Trump with 60% of the vote or more, including a couple of states (Kentucky, Louisiana), where he had more than 70% of the vote.
The state of Florida, which is the home of both Gov. Ron DeSantis and Trump, has watched Trump gain steadily in recent months. Trump previously trailed DeSantis in the state 42% to 47% back in December 2022.
