President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are likely to be their parties’ nominees for the 2024 election.

While both will likely win the primaries according to most election polls, Biden will “lose” at least one state’s primary.

What Happened: A new report showed Biden trailing Trump in many swing states ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The state of New Hampshire has voted a Democrat as president in each of the last five presidential elections and may do so again in the 2024 election, making it less of a swing state than others.

In the 2020 election, Biden won the state with 52.9% of the vote compared to 45.5% for Trump, helping the president secure four Electoral College votes.

While he can win the state's general election, Biden will not be able to win the Democratic primary in the state.

As shared by NBC News, Biden will not be on the New Hampshire primary ballot for the 2024 election. The news came as the state of South Carolina was selected by the Democratic National Committee to be the first state to vote in the 2024 election cycle. Iowa and New Hampshire were previously the first states in the election cycle.

Biden's campaign officials told New Hampshire officials the president will comply with the efforts of the Democratic National Committee. Biden will not file to be on the New Hampshire primary ballot.

"While the president wishes to participate in the Primary, he is obligated as a Democratic candidate for President to comply with the Delegate Selection Rules for the 2024 Democratic National Convention promulgated by the Democratic National Committee," Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez wrote in a letter seen by NBC News.

New Hampshire officials have cited a state law that requires them to hold the first primary election. New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley responded to the news from Biden on X.

"The reality is that Joe Biden will win the NH FITN (first in the nation) Primary in January, win renomination in Chicago and will be re-elected next November. NH voters know and trust Joe Biden that's why he is leading Trump in NH by double digits," Buckley wrote.

Why It's Important: While Biden won the 2020 election primary to win the Democratic nomination, he placed fifth in the state of New Hampshire.

Biden secured only 8.4% of the state's votes in the primary, ranking behind Bernie Sanders (25.6%), Pete Buttigieg (24.3%), Amy Klobuchar (19.7%) and Elizabeth Warren (9.2%).

Biden later won the South Carolina primary and gained momentum to eventually win the Democratic nomination for president in the 2020 election.

With Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropping out of the Democratic primary, Biden faces minimal competition in the election primary.

While his name will not appear on ballots in New Hampshire, a line for write-ins will allow voters to put Biden's name down.

"If 50% of the voters write in Joe Biden's name, then the challenge will be preparing to count those write-in votes up at the end of the night when polls close," New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan said.
