We May Have Found Elon Musk's Secret Twitter Account... And It's Weird

Zinger Key Points
  • Elon Musk may have inadvertently revealed his burner account while helping Twitter "power users" monetize their tweets.
  • Elon Test's account has gained thousands of followers overnight, despite some of the tweets being unusual or off-color.

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk has said multiple times that “the most entertaining outcome is the most likely,” and he may have ironically provided his 136.6 million followers with a few hours of entertainment — by searching through the tweets of his burner account on the platform.

What Happened: The CEO tweeted Monday, trying to help the “power users” of the platform to enable subscriptions on their accounts — a new way for Twitter’s tweeters to monetize their tweets.

Perhaps the billionaire didn’t realize that in the upper-right-hand corner of his screenshot, sat a photo of one of his sons, X AE A-Xii, indicating that Musk has more than one Twitter account that he can easily switch through.

It didn’t take long for internet sleuths to claim that they found the billionaire’s burner account.

Enter @ErmnMusk, or Elon Test.

For the uninitiated, people use burner accounts on Twitter for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is to post content anonymously or under a pseudonym. Burner accounts allow users to share their thoughts, opinions and content without revealing their identity or risking backlash or harassment from other users.

In the case for Elon Test, if it really is his burner account, his anonymity is toast, as the account as blown up with thousands of followers overnight — and his reputation may be too, as some of the tweets are kind of weird.

Let’s thumb through some of the replies.

The first is a little nuanced, so we’ll explain.

The woman in the tweet is Caroline Ellison, former CEO of bankrupted crypto hedge fund Alameda Research. She used to have an on-again/off-again romantic relationship with Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the bankrupt crypto platform FTX. Alameda and FTX were closely related.

The original tweet was making a lewd joke at the romantic relationship, with the Elon Test account replying with “I 💜 librarians.”

In another tweet, the Elon Test account — which is supposed to be his son, as identified by this tweet, and his son's birthday — replied to the Elon Musk account. We’ll let you take a look.

Musk is known to make off-color jokes and comments in public and on Twitter, most times using his own Twitter account — remember the Bill Gates tweet?

While some fans appreciate the billionaire’s humor and see it as a sign of his authenticity and irreverence, others have criticized it as inappropriate or unprofessional — but it's doubtful that his sense of humor is leaving the 51-year-old anytime soon.
