'Probably None Of Us Will Have A Job' — Elon Musk Predicts Massive Job Losses Due To AI

by Adrian Volenik

Speaking at the VivaTech 2024 conference in Paris, Elon Musk once again voiced his opinions on AI, saying, "In a benign scenario, probably none of us will have a job." This statement, if realized, could potentially reshape our societal structure.

Musk elaborated, "In that benign scenario, there would be universal high income, not universal basic income … there would be no shortage of goods or services."

To him, this is the most likely scenario, with an estimated 80% chance of transpiring. However, he didn't shy away from addressing the darker possibilities, saying that when robots and AI can do everything better than humans, life could lose its meaning.

Don't Miss:

  • Regular investors can join the U.S. military in supporting next-gen AI robotics for just $500.
  • A startup that turns videos into games gets backing from Mark Cuban and opens a round for regular investors at $250.

This isn't the first time Musk has made bold predictions about AI’s rapid progress. He has been vocal about artificial intelligence’s potential risks and benefits for years. In March, he tweeted, "AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined."

Musk cofounded OpenAI in 2015 to ensure safe AI development. Fast-forward to now, and his companies, such as Tesla and Neuralink, are at the forefront of integrating AI into everyday tech. From self-driving cars to advanced robotics, these companies demonstrate his commitment to and influence in AI.

In 2023, Elon Musk's startup xAI launched Grok, an AI chatbot integrated with the social media platform X. It is a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

Musk's ambitious timelines and grand visions often stir the pot, sparking both excitement and skepticism in the tech community. But do Musk's statements carry any significance, or are they just baseless predictions?

AI's capabilities

AI's capabilities have grown massively in recent years. It excels in natural language processing, image recognition, and autonomous driving. AI can quickly analyze huge amounts of data, helping businesses make smarter decisions and predict trends.

However, these advancements also raise questions about the future of work and the potential societal changes that could result from widespread AI adoption.

There's growing unease about potential job displacement, with many fearing that automation could replace human workers in roles ranging from manufacturing to customer service. Additionally, ethical issues are being raised about AI decision-making, privacy, and the potential misuse of AI technologies.

Musk concluded the tech conference interview by answering the question of his biggest hope and fear in one word. "I can give you my biggest hope in one word, which would be Mars. Mars would ensure that consciousness survives for a long time. My biggest fear, in one word, AI."
