Three historic European tapestries to be conserved as part of Bank of America initiative to preserve culturally important works of art at museums worldwide

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Frick Art & Historical Center (The Frick Pittsburgh) in Pittsburgh's Point Breeze neighborhood announces that it will receive a Bank of America 2016 Art Conservation Project grant for the conservation of three early-16th-century European tapestries in its collection. The Frick Pittsburgh's collection includes four tapestries purchased by founder Helen Clay Frick from 1965–1970 specifically for The Frick Art Museum's rotunda, where they are on permanent display. One of the tapestries, Rest on the Flight Into Egypt, which is of Flemish origin, was recently conserved through a National Endowment for the Arts grant award. Of the three tapestries to be conserved as part of the Bank of America Art Conservation Project— The Court of Love—is also of Flemish origin, while the other two—Lady and Attendants and Two Musicians—were woven by the French School of Loire.

Frick Director Robin Nicholson says, "We are honored and delighted to receive this generous grant and are most grateful for the generous support of Bank of America. The Frick's historic tapestries are enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors to The Frick Art Museum annually, and much-needed conservation work will ensure that they remain intact for the enjoyment of future generations."

Bank of America Vice-Chairman Terry Laughlin remarked: "The Bank of America Art Conservation Project is an extension of our global commitment to supporting the arts and delivering both social and economic value to the community. Our support for the arts is diverse, and includes loaning our art collection to museums at no cost, sponsorships, grants to arts organizations for arts education, and the preservation of cultural treasures. I'm delighted that we are making this grant to The Frick Pittsburgh in support of a great institution and its good works in the Pittsburgh community."

Frick Director of Curatorial Affairs Sarah Hall comments, "The Frick is fortunate to be one of more than 20 museums awarded funding by the Bank of America Art Conservation Project this year. Textile conservation of 500-year-old tapestries is a highly specialized and labor intensive endeavor, and this grant allows us to continue to advance both the physical care of the tapestries and our research into their history. We plan to document the conservation through expanding the website, fricktapestry.org."

The conservation work is planned to be completed by expert textile conservator Julia Woodward Dippold of Baltimore, Maryland, who has worked with the Frick's tapestry collection for nearly twenty years and has completed projects for major museums and collections internationally, including the Ringling Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. The work will commence in January 2017 and is expected to be completed by July 2018.
