Sony Corp.
SNE and the other big record labels around the world are going to
launch their own streaming service in an effort to compete with Apple Inc.'s AAPL iTunes.
The software, “Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity,” which Sony took the curtains off a few months ago, is slowly being unveiled around the world, and will be available to work on Sony products, and smartphones using Google Inc.'s GOOG Android operating systems.
“We took a long time looking at music before jumping in,” Tim Schaaff, the chief executive officer of Sony Network Entertainment said at the MIDEM music industry conference in Cannes, France this weekend.
As with iTunes, Music Unlimited will require a payment to access songs and add them to personal libraries. Unlike iTunes, you need to be connected to an online device to download songs.
This is not the first competitor Apple has had, Shaaff said. “There have been a lot of dead bodies along the way.".
Sony will use its clout with other record companies to get artists on the new service. “Most of the cloud-based companies have been start-ups, but Sony is a big company starting this,” he said.
