The principal business activity of the Company is the operation of a general consumer product retail and wholesale business selling to customers through various channels including retail stores, websites, catalogs and mobile applications. It also operates a wholesale segment under the Free People and Leifsdottir brands. It operates two business segments; a lifestyle specialty Retailing segment and a Wholesale apparel segment. Retail segment consists of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain and BHLDN brands, whose merchandise is sold directly to the customers through retail stores, websites, mobile applications, catalogs and customer contact centers. Wholesale apparel segment consists of the Free People wholesale division that, designs, develops and markets young women's contemporary casual apparel. It provides unified store environments that establish emotional bonds with the customer. It offers its products and markets its brands directly to the consumer through its e-commerce websites, ww.urbanoutfitters.com, www.anthropologie.com, www.freepeople.com, www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk, www.urbanoutfitters.de, www.urbanoutfitters.fr, www.anthropologie.eu, www.shopterrain.com and www.bhldn.com and also through its Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People catalogs. The Company competes against smaller, independent specialty stores, as well as department stores and national specialty chains. It's Anthropologie, Free People and BHLDN stores also face competition from small boutiques that offer an individualized shopping experience. The Company is subject to customs, child labor, tax, employment, privacy, truth-in-advertising and other laws, including consumer protection regulations and zoning and occupancy ordinances that regulate retailers generally and/or govern the importation, promotion and sale of merchandise and the operation. As of January 31, 2015, the Company operated 546 stores. Stores located in the United States totaled 464 as of January 31, 2015. Operations in Europe and Canada included 50 stores and 32 stores as of January 31, 2015, respectively. In addition, the Company's Wholesale segment sold and distributed apparel to approximately 1,600 department and specialty retailers.
