Starbucks Corp was formed in 1985. The Company is the roaster, marketer & retailer of specialty coffee, operating in 68 countries. It purchases and roasts high-quality coffees that it sells, along with handcrafted coffee, tea and other beverages and a variety of fresh food items, through company-operated stores. It also sells a variety of coffee and tea products and licenses its trademarks through other channels such as licensed stores, grocery and national foodservice accounts. In addition to its flagship Starbucks Coffee brand, it also sells goods and services under brands: Teavana, Tazo, Seattle's Best Coffee, Evolution Fresh, La Boulange and Ethos. The Company has four reportable operating segments: Americas, which is inclusive of the US, Canada, and Latin America; Europe, Middle East, and Africa; China/Asia Pacific and Channel Development. It also has several non-reportable operating segments, including Teavana, Seattle's Best Coffee, Evolution Fresh, and its Digital Ventures business, which are combined and referred to as All Other Segments. The Americas, EMEA, and CAP segments include both company-operated and licensed stores. Its Americas segment is mature business and has achieved significant scale. Certain markets within its EMEA and CAP operations are still in the early stages of development and require a more extensive support organization, relative to their current levels of revenue and operating income, than its Americas operations. In certain markets within EMEA and CAP, occupancy costs and store operating expenses can be higher than in the Americas segment due to higher rents for prime store locations or costs of compliance with country-specific regulatory requirements. The Americas and EMEA segments also include certain foodservice accounts, primarily in Canada and the UK. Its Americas segment also includes its La Boulange retail stores. The Channel Development segment includes roasted whole bean and ground coffees, premium Tazo teas, Starbucks- and Tazo-branded single-serve products, a variety of ready-to-drink beverages, such as Frappuccino beverages, Starbucks Doubleshot espresso drinks, Starbucks Refreshers beverages, and other branded products sold through channels such as grocery stores, warehouse clubs, specialty retailers, convenience stores, and US foodservice accounts. The Company's competitors for coffee beverage sales are quick-service restaurants and specialty coffee shops. It also competes with restaurants and other specialty retailers for prime retail locations and qualified personnel to operate both new and existing stores. Its coffee and tea products sold through its Channel Development segment compete directly against specialty coffees and teas sold through grocery stores, warehouse clubs, specialty retailers, convenience stores, and US foodservice accounts and compete indirectly against all other coffees and teas on the market. Its trademarks include Starbucks, the Starbucks logo, Tazo, Seattle's Best Coffee, Teavana, Frappuccino, Starbucks VIA, Evolution Fresh and La Boulange.
