Progressive Corp an Ohio corporation commenced doing business on February 6, 1965. The Company offers personal and commercial property-casualty insurance products related to motor vehicles. The Company's insurance subsidiaries and affiliate provide personal and commercial automobile insurance and other specialty property-casualty insurance and related services throughout the United States. It writes private passenger auto insurance and the majority of its special lines products; it began writing auto and boat insurance in Massachusetts during 2008. It also writes private passenger auto in the District of Columbia. It writes commercial auto policies in 49 states; it does not currently write commercial auto in Hawaii or the District of Columbia. The Company's Personal Lines segment writes insurance for personal autos and recreational and other vehicles. This business generally offers more than one program in a single state, with each program targeted to a specific distribution channel, market, or customer group. The Personal Lines segment consists of personal auto insurance products, as well as its lines products. Personal auto insurance includes Snapshot, a usage-based insurance product. Special lines products include insurance for motorcycles, ATVs, RVs, mobile homes, watercraft, snowmobiles, and similar items. The Agency business includes business written by its network of more than 35,000 independent insurance agencies located throughout the United States, as well as brokerages in New York and California. The Agency business also writes through strategic alliance business relationships with other insurance companies, financial institutions, and national agencies. The Direct business includes business written directly by its online, via mobile devices, and over the phone. The Commercial Lines business writes primary liability and physical damage insurance for automobiles and trucks owned by small businesses. The majority of its Commercial Auto customers insure two or fewer vehicles. The Commercial Auto business, which is mainly distributed through the independent agency channel, operates in four markets namely Business auto, For-hire transportation, Contractor, For-hire specialty and Tow. The Company's other indemnity businesses mainly consist of managing its run-off businesses. Its main service business is providing policy issuance and claims adjusting services for the Commercial Auto Insurance Procedures/Plans 'CAIP' and Commission-Based Businesses. CAIP are state-supervised plans serving the involuntary market. It manages its claims handling on a company wide basis. Commission-based businesses are of two types namely Progressive Home Advantage which offers new and existing Agency and Direct customers home, condominium, and renters insurance written by unaffiliated homeowner's insurance companies. Progressive Commercial AdvantageSM which offers customers the ability to package their auto coverage with other commercial coverages that are underwritten by four unaffiliated insurance companies or placed with other companies through an unaffiliated agency The Company's competitors are specialty companies and large multi-line insurance carriers. Property-casualty insurers generally compete on the basis of price, consumer recognition, coverage offered and other product features, claims handling, financial stability, customer service, and geographic coverage. Progressive's insurance subsidiaries are generally subject to regulation and supervision by insurance departments of the jurisdictions in which they are domiciled or licensed to transact business.
