Potbelly Corporation was established in 1977. The Company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Potbelly Sandwich Works LLC, operates Potbelly Sandwich Works sandwich shops in 21 states and the District of Columbia. The Company has 234, 264 and 296 company-operated shops in operation, respectively. The Company also sells and administers franchises of new Potbelly Sandwich Works sandwich shops. Its sandwiches, salads and hand-dipped milkshakes are all made fresh to order and its cookies are baked fresh each day. Each of its shops offers freshly-made food with high quality ingredients from a simple menu with sandwiches at a limited number of price points. Its sandwich offerings include Turkey Breast, Italian, Grilled Chicken and Cheddar, Smoked Ham, A Wreck, Chicken Salad, Meatball, Mediterranean, Roast Beef and Tuna Salad. Customers can also order off-menu sandwiches and variations on its sandwiches, including the "Wrecking Ball" (A Wreck plus meatballs), the "Lucky Seven" (which includes all seven of its sliced meat choices) and the "Cheeseburger" (the Meatball with cheddar cheese and no marinara). Its shops also offer salads which are made fresh to order with high quality ingredients. It also offers soups, chili and side dishes. Different soups are offered daily, including varieties such as Broccoli Cheddar, Chicken Noodle, Loaded Baked Potato, Chicken Enchilada, Spicy Southwest Veggie and Tomato soup. Its methods of marketing and advertising promotes and maintain the Potbelly brand image and, among other things, generate awareness of shop locations and new menu offerings. The Company competes in the restaurant industry, primarily in the limited-service restaurant segment but also with restaurants in the full-service restaurant segment, and face significant competition from a variety of restaurants, convenience stores and other outlets on a national, regional and local level. The Company and its franchisees are subject to various federal, state, local and international laws affecting its business.
